The Fittest Mother on Earth

This past weekend, I was fortunate enough to attend the No Bull Crossfit Games in Madison, WI. I was able to see the world’s best men and women compete for the title of fittest on earth. Though Tia Claire Toomey and Justin Medeiros took home top prizes, there was one performance that simply blew me away. That performance was of Annie Thorisdottir (Anníe Mist Þórisdóttir).

Here are 3 reasons why Annie’s performance stands out amongst the rest of the field:

  1. Annie became a mother almost a year to the day of her third place finish at the games. She had to deal with all of the challenges of becoming a mother (repairing here body, breast feeding, lack of sleep), during a pandemic, and overcome tremendous competition just to make it back to the Games.

  2. This is Annie’s first podium appearance since 2017. When most women’s performances diminish as they age, the 31 year old Icelander has improved. She has been competing at the games since she was 17 years old back in 2009, and aside from a year off from a back injury, she has made it to the Games 11 times!

  3. When the pressure was on, Annie didn’t blink. Though she was 5 points out of 3rd place going into Sunday, Annie showed amazing athleticism and posting top 4 performances on all Sunday events.

Every mother (and father) can look to Annie for inspiration. Just because you have a child doesn’t mean your best days are behind you. For some, the best are yet to come!

Breathing Exercises Lower Blood Pressure

DSC00959.jpg

If you have followed me for any length of time, you know that I am head over heals for intentional breath training. Not only have I seen it create enormous changes in movement capabilities for clients, but it also affects the nervous system as well, downregulating the fight or flight response and upregulating rest and digest pathways.

There is even more good news when it comes to practicing regular breathing work: decreased blood pressure! In a recent study published by Colorado University, researchers found, “Working out just five minutes daily via a practice described as “strength training for your breathing muscles” lowers blood pressure and improves some measures of vascular health as well as, or even more than, aerobic exercise or medication. Moreover, the exercise group found, “their systolic blood pressure (the top number) dip nine points on average, a reduction which generally exceeds that achieved by walking 30 minutes a day five days a week. That decline is also equal to the effects of some blood pressure-lowering drug regimens.”

As I have spoked about on the Fitness, Wellness, and Longevity podcast, breathwork is critical for the ageless athlete, and should be a part of your every day routine.

The Time Is Now...

masters.jpg

There is an ancient Chinese proverb, “The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now.”

In a recent article from The Morning Chalk Up, seven master’s Crossfit Games athletes were interviewed about being an aging athlete. Their message, “It’s time to recognize that you can continue to be strong, fit, healthy, and even gain strength and fitness, well after 50. In fact, the older you get, the more you need to double down and work on your fitness.”

I couldn’t agree more with the interviewed athletes. Moreover, you don’t have to be a world class athlete to pursue a greater level of fitness. Everyone has the ability to be the best version of themselves, regardless of age. The biggest challenge for ageless athletes is the self-imposed limitations they have created and an inability to get out of their own way. Societal programming has made it “normal” to adopt a sedentary lifestyle, and has promoted “I’ll sleep when I’m dead,” culture. In looking at the most successful clients that I work with, their tireless work ethic is met with some balance in the form of exercise, sleep, and nutrition. Wisdom is needed in identifying what your limiting factors are, and going after the low hanging fruit in order to maximize returns.
